Serbia, with the help of the European Union, is currently working on the modernization of the railway Corridor 10, for which a financial package of 2.8 billion euros has been announced (including about 500 million euros for possible additional costs). The package refers to the improvement of the Belgrade-Niš section on Corridor 10, which will enable high-speed rail connectivity up to 200 km/h between the two cities, with a faster flow of goods and services, and will also contribute to rapid integration into the EU railway networks.

The package consists of an investment grant of up to €600 million from the EU – the largest EU grant for a single project in Serbia to date; A €1.1 billion loan from the EIB and a €550 million loan from the EBRD. The EU has already approved grants worth €265 million, and the first tranche of €82.8 million has been confirmed by the protocol signing on the train from Belgrade to Nis.

The European Union supports Serbia, among other things, through railway infrastructure construction projects, as well as through support for transport sector reform.

One of the key infrastructure projects is the Modernization and Reconstruction of the Belgrade-Niš-Presevo Railway Corridor (border with North Macedonia). This important 350 km long railway reconstruction project will be implemented in sections, and the total cost is estimated at more than 3 billion euros. The project will be financed by EU grants, as well as soft loans from the EIB and EBRD.

Another very important project for the improvement of railway transport in Serbia, which is being implemented with the assistance of the European Union, is the Modernization of the railway line Niš Dimitrovgrad (border with Bulgaria). This is one of the priority projects supported by grants in the amount of EUR 110 million. The project is essential for the electrification of this important section of Corridor 10, which is currently not electrified. Successful implementation of this project would significantly contribute to improving the operation of the railway and reducing pollution

Serbia, with the help of the European Union, is also working on the preparation of projects for the Modernization of the Belgrade-Šid and Stalać-Kraljevo-Rudnica railways.
